East Quogue School Budget Up for Re-Vote

After a school budget fell seven votes shy of passing in May, district voters take up a revised budget on Tuesday.

After choosing not to support a school budget that pierced the state-mandated tax levy cap, East Quogue School District voters will vote on Tuesday on a revised budget that comes in under the cap.

Last month's budget vote fell seven votes shy of passing, leading to a string of "gut-wrenching" cuts in order to make the new proposal more palatable to voters, said Principal Robert Long. Four hundred and ninety-four voters approved the budget, with 340 against, a 59 percent margin.

Cuts this time around include two special education teachers, a part-time speech teacher, a part-time psychologist, a custodian, three teachers aides and four teaching assistants – in addition to those already made in the previous proposal.

The budget comes in at $22.41 million, $587,000 less than previously sought by the district.

Voters can hit the polls until 9 p.m. at the East Quogue Elementary School.
