East Quogue Fails to Rally Support For State Tax Cap Breach, Budget Fails

School board members also elected.

East Quogue School District voters on Tuesday failed to pull together the supermajority needed to approve a cap-busting $23 million 2013-2014 budget that includes 4.6 percent tax levy.

The budget failed with 494 voters in favor and 340 against, a 59 percent margin. The district needed 60 percent of voters to support the budget — it was 7 votes shy of that goal.

East Quogue was one of five school districts to pierce the cap on Long Island. The district said it chose to pierce the state’s 2 percent tax cap to avoid deeper staff and programs cuts.

Now, the district will have to shave an additional $587,000 from the budget. On the chopping block is the following:

  • 2 special education teachers
  • 1-2 general education teachers
  • Possible ½ day Kindergarten
  • 1 reading teacher
  • 1 music teacher (eliminating instrumental music)
  • 2 teacher assistants
  • 1 custodial position
Also on Tuesday, voters elected Dianna Gobler and Carrie Bender to the school board, ousting Incumbent Joseph Tsaveras. Bender received 513 votes, Gobler 488 votes and Tsaveras 387 votes.
