Principal: Unlikely East Quogue School Will Pierce Cap Again

A hearing on a new proposal will be held on June 11.

A week after East Quogue voters failed to approve a cap-busting, $23 million budget by seven votes, East Quogue School District officials are working on a new budget proposal that Principal Robert Long, said will "unlikely pierce the tax cap."

With that, however, he said, "We are faced with the sad realization that more talented educators will have to be cut."

The district said it must cut at least $587,000 from the budget and on the chopping block are two kindergarden teachers, as well as the district's music program. Full-day kindergarden may also go to half day.

The school board will have specifics, according to Long, by June 3 when the board is scheduled to adopt a budget proposal to put before the public for a hearing on June 11. A re-vote is set for June 18.
