Public Water Comes to Areas of Quogue, Eastport

More than 10,000 feet of new pipe was installed from Eastport to Springs as part of eight water main extension projects that the Suffolk County Water Authority completed earlier this month. 

In the Westhampton-Hampton Bays areas, projects ranged in size from 2,572 feet on Penniman Point Road that will provide initial service to 85 in Quogue to 209 feet on West Side Avenue in East Quogue. There was also 1,378 feet installed on Sunrise Highway Service Road in Eastport and 556 feet on Lucy Lane, Quiogue.

“These pipes will add to our growing infrastructure on the East End and provide safe and constantly tested water to dozens of new customers,” Jeff Szabo, the water authority chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Having public water, which is tested by the New York State Department of Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, also means increased water pressure and the availability of nearby hydrants, which improves fire protection and may lower homeowner’s insurance, according to the water authority. Public water is usually accessible during a storm, while private wells stop working when the electricity is out. 

The water authority serves about 1.2 million residents.

The extensions will initially provide high-quality, treated water services for close to 300 locations, but it will lead to SCWA's ability to service significantly more residents and communities moving forward, the water authority said.

The completed extensions each took a few days to complete, and were done throughout the months of October and November.
