Historian Mac Griswold

If you've ever had the fortune to explore Shelter Island then you're
probably familiar with its gorgeous beaches, scenic bayside views, and
charming shops and homes. But what you might not be familiar with is the
historic Sylvester Manor - a dwindled and rundown estate that happened
to contain the 1666 charter for the land, correspondence from Thomas
Jefferson, and the family-named "slave staircase." In Mac Griswold's new
book The Manor,
she introduces us to this extraordinary world, and discusses how these
discoveries shed light onto the little known world of northern slavery
in early America. Join Books & Books along with cultural landscape
historian and author Mac Griswold at a special reading and signing as
she discusses this secret world that was uncovered right in our own
backyard.
