Paddleboarding: Summer's Hottest Trend In Westhampton Beach

Customers can rent or buy paddleboards at Island Surf.

This summer, customers at Island Surf in Westhampton Beach are venturing in to buy paddleboards, rather than surfboards and other watersports gear.

"They are our hottest seller this summer," said Ryan Saboe, a stand-up paddleboard instructor. "People are finding that paddleboarding is a great leisure sport that also gives you a great workout."

Sobeck said the sport is also up-and-coming because just about anyone can do it.

"I've taught people, ages 5 to 70," he said.

For those interested in buying a board, which typically range between $800 and $1,800, Sobeck suggests trying the sport first.

So far this summer, Sobeck, a Westhampton Beach native and certified lifeguard, has offered just that service to numerous locals.

"I'm in the water everyday, 300 days a year," said Sobeck, who also did two Olympic windsurfing campaigns.

Lessons, he said, are offered on a first-come, first-served basis to customers who call the store to set up an appointment. Classes average $125 per hour.

Paddleboard tours are also available.

Customers can also opt to try out a paddleboard by renting one from the shop, which will drop off and pick up boards through advanced reservations.

Rentals run $75 per board for 24 hours.
