A Fresh Catch at a New Restaurant, Frutti Di Mare

Frutti Di Mare brings a unique approach to healthy, quality dining.

Hampton residents who are familiar with the old Nathans followed by Taco Bell chain locations on Montauk Highway can say so-long to fast-food — Frutti Di Mare opened its doors last month making it the first sit-down eatery to fill the spot in several years.

Chef Marco Barrila and Sheila Minkel say they are up to the challenge of opening a restaurant during the off-season in a town that grows quiet over the winter. The pair has years of experience under their belt that includes operating Insatiable Eats, their catering service that specializes in events and private parties. Barrila has also worked with Top Chef Marcus Samuelsson and spent over a decade in the kitchens of high profile restaurants in New York City.

After many of their unsuccessful attempts to find quality delivery food at a low cost, the pair used their prior experience and seasoned background to open a restaurant that residents could eat in and have delivery, year round. Following an unfortunate motorcycle accident that left Barrila temporarily limited to travel far, he was able to pinpoint what was lacking in the Westhampton – Hampton Bays area.

“The only food you can get delivered out here is Chinese food and pizza,” he explained. “We want to offer food delivery seven days a week to our customers, something that isn’t common out here.”

The restaurant accommodates indoor and outdoor seating and caters to families and children with an extensive kids menu known as “Mare Meals.”

“These fun baskets are similar to McDonald’s prices but the quality of food is fresh and far superior,” said Minkel. “Of course it can’t be a kid’s meal without a special sea gift the kids get too.”

Kids at heart can also indulge by ordering a “Moto Meal,” a daily special for $10. The unique menu selection incorporates an Italian and Mediterranean flair. Barrila uses high quality seafood, local grown produce and makes sure it is affordable.

They also try to be eco-friendly by not only supporting local food producers and fishermen, but also by using green containers along with non-transfat, cholesterol free oils.

“We plan to keep our dishes new and exciting by changing our preparation styles and offering new adventures for seafood lovers,” said Minkel. “It’s exciting to offer quality food for a price that’s just hard to beat.”
