Corner Kick Club Collects 1,613 Old Sneakers

The shoes will be distributed to those in need around the world.

The Westhampton Beach Middle School Soccer Club, the Corner Kick Club, has successfully collected 1,613 pairs of old sneakers from community members as part of a fundraising effort.

All of the sneakers collected, according to the 6th graders in the club, will be distributed to those in need around the world through a program, called GreenSneakers.

In addition to distributing the shoes, GreenSneakers is paying the club .50 per pound of shoes collected — and the club said, the weight of 1,613 pairs of shoes helped them raise $1,310 that they will use to support their club.

Club members Cole Hempel, Comeragh Sheehan and Spencer Trager said they have the community to thank for helping them reach their goal.

They sent the following thank you:

"We'd like to specifically thank all the individual community donors as well as the Westhampton Beach Elementary, Middle and High Schools, Remsenburg Elementary School, East Quogue Elementary School, the Westhampton Free Library, the Westhampton Yacht Squadron, Sportime of the Hamptons, LIFT WH Beach, and the Westhampton Beach Tennis and Sport for welcoming us and being collection sites.  We'd also like to thank Tara and Dean DelPrete and The Survival Race runners for all their sneakers and Ms. Robbi Goldberg for a special donation.  We are grateful as well to the Manzi family and Total Pet Care and True Value Hardware for providing collection boxes and bags. Principals Ms. Miller, Mr. Herr, Ms. Slover, Dr. Masera and Mr. Long, Jr. really helped us out as well, and we couldn't have done it without them.  We'd also like to thank our parents."
