Suffolk Lacrosse Playoffs Begin This Week

West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.

Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque.  It could have easily been West Islip instead. The teams played a thrilling Long Island championship game decided in overtime. West Islip, after all, has worn four of the last six state crowns.  Perennial girls lacrosse power Northport finally broke through and won its first state Class A championship. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

It was a play on words...the pronunciation is the same as 'hot'. Don't hate :) This is one publication...built for those who don't frequent sports bars...these people may enjoy the lineup as it was built simply for that reason. I am a social person, but I also have 5 kids...if I go to a sports pub now, it looks a bit different than the hopping ones I frequented just off the path of my University …   more ›

Is Southampton Giants or Patriots Country?

Or both? Or neither? Let us know before the Super Bowl.

We've been having fun the past couple of weeks with polls, contests and questions of the day all in celebration of the New York Giant's run up to the NFC championship game this past Sunday. And now that they're about to play the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 46, Southampton fans seem to be divided in team loyalty. Yes we live in New York but, because of our proximity to eastern Connecticut and the easy access via ferry to the rest of the New England, there are a lot of Boston sports fans on the East End. So what do you think? Do Giants or Patriots fans dominate the area? And do you think the Giants can repeat their 2008 Super Bowl victory against the Patriots, or is it New England's turn to shine? Leave a comment below and let's talk …

Why You're the World's Biggest Giants Fan

Did you name your son Eli, get a helmet tattoo on your neck or paint your RV Big Blue? Tell us your stories of ultimate New York Giants fandom.

Sports is about much more than games. It’s about how we celebrate our teams, obsess over athletes, recite statistics and even party. It can dictate what we wear, where we vacation and even who we marry.  The New York Giants face the San Francisco 49ers Sunday at 6:30 p.m. EST (Fox-TV) for the right to play in the Super Bowl. So as we count the days to the NFC Championship Game and recount the improbable, plucky run by the Giants, it’s also time to celebrate our fandom. Everyone has that fan-tastic story: Did you name your son Eli (or Tiki), get a helmet tattoo on your neck or paint your RV Big Blue? Maybe you’re a fourth-generation season ticket holder or proposed to your girlfriend at halftime.  Tell us your stories of ultimate New York …

Shelter Island Team Added to Hamptons Collegiate Baseball

School board votes in favor this week of the creation of a seventh league team.

The North Fork Ospreys and the Sag Harbor Whalers will have a neighboring team this coming summer. Members of the Shelter Island School Board approved on Monday the use of their fields for a new Shelter Island addition to the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. The team, which does not yet have a nickname, is the seventh in the league, joining the North Fork Ospreys, Riverhead Tomcats, Southampton Breakers, Sag Harbor Whalers, defending champion Westhampton Aviators, and the newly created Center Moriches Battlecats, which joined the East End league in November. The 2012 season starts up this coming June. “In the times we discussed expansion over the years, Shelter Island was always one of the first locales brought up,” said the baseball …

Westhampton Beach Offense Hits A Wall

In Sunday’s Division III final, the Hurricanes fail to make big plays in 28 – 6 loss to Sayville.

When Westhampton Beach and Sayville faced each other in week three, it was a back-and-forth contest that found the Hurricanes within six points in the fourth quarter, before ultimately dropping a 32 – 18 decision. But in Sunday’s Division III final at Stony Brook’s Kenneth LaValle Stadium, there would be no tug of war, no nail biter for Westhampton fans. Sayville took command with three first-half touchdowns and the Hurricanes could never get their offense going, losing 28 – 6. It was the second-consecutive season that the Hurricanes were defeated by Sayville in the post season. “It’s all about making plays, and today we didn’t make them,” Westhampton coach Bill Parry said. “We got beat today by a better team. I hate to say that, but they …

Westhampton Beach Football Reaches Division III Championship Game

Hurricanes play perfect football to defeat Islip 28-13 in Division III Semifinal.

Westhampton starting quarterback Jack Murphy had a performance that will, without a shadow of a doubt, be remembered for many years to come. He lead the Hurricanes to a thrilling 28-13 victory over Islip in one of the Suffolk County Division III Semifinals on Friday night. Playing in front of a capacity crowd at Westhampton Beach’s home field, Murphy threw a touchdown pass (putting the Hurricanes ahead 7-0 in the second quarter) and ran for another (which gave WHB a 21-13 lead in the third quarter). His seven-yard touchdown strike to his brother T.J. Murphy snapped a 0-0 tie in the second quarter as Westhampton, now holders of a sparkling 8-2 overall record, never trailed in the game. The Hurricanes, which won their first home playoff game…

Westhampton Football: One Game Away From Championship

Hurricanes big win over Bellport sets up another home playoff game.

The Westhampton varsity football team has had one of its best seasons in school history this fall, going 6-2 during the regular season to ensure the Hurricanes a home playoff game in the opening round of the postseason. Westhampton gave its fans even more to cheer about last Friday after defeating Bellport 43-27 in the Division III quarterfinals despite trailing 14-13 at halftime. Behind the exceptional running of Brendan Eckart and passing attack featuring quarterback Jack Murphy and receiver Brian Culhane, the Hurricanes (7-2 overall) outscored Bellport 30-13 over the final two quarters while showcasing one of the most potent offenses in Suffolk. Eckart was a dominating force on the ground, rushing for 130 yards and three touchdowns, …
