The Hampton Bays Historical and Preservation Society was started in 1994 by a group of local residents. The SocietyMore currently has an office in the Chamber of Commerce building on Montauk Highway but plans to move to a permanent location just a short distance in the historic King House once that property is restored. The Society keeps records of the history of the hamlet and has 1,600 items catalogued. Also, the Society holds stewardship over a handful of historic properties including the Canoe Place Chapel.

Under the authority of the Hampton Bays Historical & Preservation Society, the Prosper King House was originallyMore constructed circa 1830. It remains as one of the area's oldest standing residences. Presently, the house is being renovated, but will one day be the location of the Historical & Preservation Society offices, as well as numerous museum exhibits, art galleries, and a local history library.
