School officials say the passage of their respective budgets will help maintain quality education.
School officials from Hampton Bays, East Quogue and Westhampton Beach are all thanking the community for passing their respective district budgets on Tuesday. "We are very appreciative of the community's support once again," said Robert Long, principal of the East Quogue Elementary School District, whose voters approved the district's $22.4 million budget in a 432 to 155 vote. "This budget will allow us to maintain a quality instructional program while simultaneously being sensitive to the needs of our tax payers," he said. And Les Black, superintendent of the East Quogue School District, said, "Apparently the weather didn't have an impact. The results were outstanding." Quogue School District The Quogue School's $7.68 million budget, which includes a 1.72 percent increase in spending, passed with 85 voters in support and 15 against. Dr. Anael Alston, who ran unopposed for a seat being vacated by board member Walter Stockton, received 85 votes. Hampton Bays School District The Hampton Bays School District's $45.8 million budget, which carries with it a 2.01 percent increase in spending, passed in a 945 to 393 vote. Two incumbent candidates, Warren Booth and Christopher Garvey, who ran unopposed for three year terms, were re-elected. Booth received 977 votes and Garvey obtained 1,072 votes. Voters continue to trickle in despite the rainy weather, officials say.
UPDATE: To get the full results of the vote, click here. The rain has not put a damper on school district voting, school officials from Westhampton-Hampton Bays said Tuesday. In Westhampton Beach, District Clerk Judy McCarthy said voters have been trickling in all day with 235 residents casting votes as of 2 p.m. That number, said McCarthy, is consistant with year's past. McCarthy said she expects that the majority of voters will hit the polls before and after a school concert scheduled to take place at the high school at 7 p.m. "I'm sure we will get a flurry then," she said, adding that a number of students got the opportunity to vote for the first time today. Budget information for school districts from Westhampton to Hampton Bays.
On May 15, residents are being asked to cast a ballot for their respective school district budgets and to elect school board members. The following is information on the budgets being presented for a vote in the Hampton Bays, Westhampton Beach, Quogue, and East Quogue School Districts. The Hampton Bays School District has proposed a $45.8 million budget, which carries with it a 2.01 percent increase in spending. For taxpayers that translates to a 1.87 percent tax rate increase. In dollars, the tax rate looks to raise taxes to $11.70 per $1,000 assessed value. A ceremony will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
To celebrate a national award the school received last month for being "green," the Hampton Bays Middle School will hold a "Green Pep Rally" on Friday at 9:30 a.m in the school's gym. The event, according to school officials, will feature students reading essays they wrote about being "green" and all students will take a pledge to be "green." Expected to attend the event will be officials, including Congresman Tim Bishop, Assemblyman Fred Thiele, and Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman. Hampton Bays Middle School, which was selected from a field of 350 schools to receive the award from the United States Department of Education shares the honor with 78 other schools from across the county. Will Zaffuto got an honorable mention at the Brookhaven National laboratory science fair.
Will Zaffuto, a third grader at Westhampton Beach Elementary School won an Honorable Mention at the Brookhaven National Laboratory regional elementary science fair on Saturday, May 5 for his project "Greasy, Greasy Chips." Zaffuto tested an assortment of potato chips to determine which brand and style of chip was the greasiest and which was the least greasy. Zaffuto competed against approximately 85 winning 3rd grade projects. Also competing in the Brookhaven Laboratory fair from Westhampton Beach Elementary School were: Jane Atkinson, kindergarten; Reilly Atkinson, 1st Grade; Molly Mensch and Conor Farnan, 2nd Grade; Trevor Moyle, 4th grade; and Molly Fadelici, 5th grade.

Two dozen high school students were inducted into the National Honor Society on April 26.
During a "Light is the Symbol of Truth" event at Hampton Bays High School on April 26, two dozen students were inducted in the National Honor Society. Senior Augusta Greenbaum says she hopes to get more people involved in her school's alumni group.
Augusta Greenbaum, Westhampton Beach High School senior and salutatorian, says she has one more goal to accomplish before she graduates and heads off to college — to garner more Westhampton Beach alumni association members. Greenbaum, who helped found the alumni association in 2011, is working as a 2012 student liaison to do her part by sending around press releases and getting her classmates to join; however, she says there are so many more graduates of Westhampton Beach Schools that don't know about the organization. To date, Greenbaum says there are 180 members of the group and she intends to have as many students from 2012 graduating class join, of which there are a total of 243 students. Deadline to apply is May 15 for female high school seniors.
The East End Women’s Network has announced its annual student scholarship competition, available to any female senior attending high school on the East End. The winner of the competition will receive $1,000 and the runner-up will get $500. Judging is based on grade average, community and school involvement, reference letters, goals, and an essay on about why it is important for women to support one another. Eligibility is offered to female high school seniors in any of the five East End towns — Riverhead, Southampton, Southold, Shelter Island, and East Hampton — in addition to Eastport Manor High School and Shoreham-Wading River High School.
