The Post Office Wants Your Non-Perishables

Carriers to collect for Island Harvest on Saturday.

On Saturday, postal carriers will be collecting more than just letters. As part Island Harvest’s Stamp Out Hunger Campaign, which aims to provide food to the needy, postal carriers from Westhampton to Hampton Bays will be gathering non-perishable food items left in the mailboxes of their patrons.

“We have been doing this for fifteen years,” said Maura Hanm, postmaster for the Westhampton Post Office.  “I think it’s wonderful and people can help invest in their community and help stockpile food for those in desperate need.”

Hanm said all of the post office’s carriers will be out on Saturday doing their part.

“People can leave non-perishable food items and toiletries as well,” she said. “Diapers and toothpaste are things people could use.”

To help make the carriers' load a little less taxing, Hanm suggests homeowners place multiple items in bags for the carriers.

“Anything residents can do to help the effort is very much appreciated,” said Hanm.

According to Island Harvest, all of the goods collected will be sent to soup kitchens and food banks across the island to help feed the 285,000 on Long Island who risk going hungry every day.
