Between the Lines - Evanovich is a Great Summer Read

Spend a few hours with one of Jersey's most hapless bounty hunters.

Sometimes I think about meeting the authors of my favorite books.  I would like to sit at the feet of some and absorb their wisdom. Others are just too intimidating to even contemplate meeting. I can imagine sitting and having a nice cup of tea with several of my favorites.  But there is only one author that I would truly love to meet up with in New Jersey for some Cluck-in-a-Bucket chicken and a beer…..Janet Evanovich.

Evanovich recently released her 17th Stephanie Plum novel, Smokin’ Seventeen.  It is easy to keep up with her books because each has a number in the title.  In each book, the reader is invited to follow the antics of Stephanie Plum, her sidekick Lula and the two loves of her life, Ranger and Morelli.

Once you meet Stephanie, you will become attached to her hapless way of pursuing her career as a bounty hunter.  She seems to always end up with a wrecked vehicle (often not even her own) and some sort of slime all over her tank top and jeans.  You will also form a definite opinion about which man she should pick.  I have entered into heated conversations about the benefits of Morelli over Ranger.  I am not alone in having strong feelings.  The latest book comes with two stickers:  “I ‘heart’ Morelli” and “I ‘heart’ Ranger.”

The supporting characters in this book are all strong enough to carry a story alone.  Grandma Mazur is an encyclopedia of quirkiness in herself.  Her meddling, her obsession with funerals and her bright track suits will cause you to laugh aloud.  Stephanie’s high school friends and enemies, her co-workers and neighbors are colorful and eccentric.

If you have never read a book by Janet Evanovich book, pick up the first in the series, One for the Money.  If you are a fan, enjoy this latest tale of the trials and tribulations of Stephanie Plum!
