Between the Lines - AfterImage Will Stay With You Long After You Turned The Last Page

A book review from The Open Book.

Every once in a while you read a memoir that stays with you long after you have turned the last page.  AfterImage by Carla Malden is that kind of book.  Ms. Malden writes the story of her long-time romance with her husband, his devastating illness and eventual death with such honesty and grace that you will envy her great love and admire her candor.

Laurence Starkman and Carla Malden met in high school.  They were that rare couple that could work together, live together and raise a child together without losing the love that they shared. They had good friends and dear family and a daughter that brought them so much joy.  They truly were leading a charmed life.  And then illness struck with lightning speed and changed their lives.

Ms. Malden writes of the before and the after. She writes of being a young widow and a mother to a grieving teen.  She tells her story with compassion and warmth and a touch of surprising gentle humor.  As Malden says, “AfterImage is a story of love more than loss, memory more than sorrow, life more than death. It is a personal story. It's my story.
