SUFFOLK LIBRARIES WIN LIBRARY JOURNAL HONORS

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY - Fourteen Public Libraries in Suffolk County have received American Star designations from Library Journal, the oldest and most respected publication covering the library field.   They include Amagansett, Center Moriches, Cutchogue, the Hampton Library, Huntington, Mastics-Moriches-Shirley, Mattituck-Laurel, Middle Country, Northport, Patchogue-Medford, Port Jefferson, Quogue, Shelter Island and Westhampton. Eight of the fourteen libraries have received Star awards six years in a row. This year 263 libraries received the honor nationally, comprising 3.5% of those eligible.

Library Journal Star ratings are based on a library’s annual number of patron visits, circulation, program attendance, and public Internet computer use.  This data is reported yearly by public libraries to their state library agencies and compiled nationally by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

“Library Journal’s Star designation is a prestigious honor,” said Suffolk Cooperative Library System Director Kevin Verbesey.  “We are proud that Suffolk County libraries represent more than 5% of this year’s designees while comprising well less than 1% of all public libraries in the United States.”
