Live-brary Comes to Hecksher Prak

Recently at Heckscher State Park on a picture-perfect weekend, hundreds of people kicked off the start of summer at the Park’s annual festival.  Filled with family activities, hands-on environmental displays and presentations, programs featuring live animals, children’s arts and crafts and other various exhibits, as well as vendor booths and a rock wall, the festival drew visitors from all over Long Island, many of them stopping by the Suffolk County Live-brary.com display.

Librarians from all-around Suffolk County chatted with dozens of visitors, many of whom were curious about downloading books, music and films on Live-brary.com. Children kept busy playing with Live-brary beach balls and balloons as their parents learned how to download materials. One young child found the magnifying glasses from the Science Buddies kits, which circulate to member libraries in Suffolk County as part of a summer reading club grant, to be “awesome”.  More than one parent admitted to loving their local libraries. One man said “Live-brary is cool” and another told us that Live-brary “has saved my life” during a long commute to and from work.

Many parents and children remarked that they had recently visited their local public library to sign up for the annual Summer Reading Club. This year, the majority of Suffolk libraries are utilizing the same science based theme of Fizz, Boom, Read! For their reading clubs. The Suffolk County Libraries provided free raffle tickets to all visitors. Two lucky library patrons from Smithtown and Hauppauge each won an iPod Nano.

By late Sunday afternoon many new converts to Live-brary.com were made thanks to the efforts of the librarians who manned the display at Heckscher Park.
