BAYPORT - BLUE POINT PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY

Come to the Bayport-Blue Point Public Library on Saturday, August 17 between 1 and 5 p.m. to celebrate the Library’s 75th birthday.   There will be events for all ages, including games, crafts, festivities, music, food, and, of course, cake! No sign-up is necessary. The children’s department has lots of fun planned throughout the day, starting with a carnival behind the Blue Point Fire House from 10:00 am through 12:00 noon. Then back to the library for the festivities.

The Library got its start in 1938 when volunteers from the Parent-Teacher Association of Blue Point School went door-to door with a wheelbarrow collecting donations from the neighbors. Originally, the volunteer-run library was housed in the Blue Point School. Due to increased enrollment, the library moved in 1941 to share a building with a meat market. The library then moved again in 1943 to the southeast corner of Blue Point Avenue and Madison Street. In 1945, the library was open three days a week for 4 hours each day. Once again in 1947, the library relocated to the Bennett house just south of the Fire Department. The library changed its name in 1952 when the school districts of Bayport and Blue Point merged, making it the Bayport-Blue Point Library. The new library was built in 1956 behind the Bennett house where it stands today.
