Westhampton Beach Sports Notebook: Boys Tennis Takes 2nd

Tennis team makes a strong finish, baseball squad holds on to playoff hopes while the lacrosse team suffers tough losses.

The Hurricanes boys’ varsity tennis team finished the regular season with a 10-2 record, taking second place overall in Suffolk Division IV. Westhampton’s only losses came at the hands of 2011 league champion, The Ross School.

Led by top singles player Christian Thienel, the Hurricanes were able to gain convincing two-match sweeps over nearly all of their competition this season, including Eastport-South Manor, Longwood, East Hampton and Southampton. Some of Thienel’s singles wins included a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Shoreham-Wading River’s Luis Belmonte, a 6-4, 6-1 win against Bay Shore’s Steven Marciata and most recently, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 comeback victory against Longwood’s top singles player, Eric Sumanaru, on May 2.

But Westhampton Beach saw many of its players contribute to its success this season, including Mike Polan, Kevin Cino, Cody Miller, Beecher Halsui, Brian Schwartz, Sheel Patel, Reid Paoletta, Anish Dalal and J.D. Sipala.

It’s been a tough season for Westhampton Beach’s varsity baseball team after the Hurricanes started the League VI season by losing their first eight games. But after the 0-8 start, Westhampton managed to pick up a pair of wins last week, defeating a playoff-bound Rocky Point team 9-5 at Rocky Point High School on April 30 and besting Amityville 2-0 on the road on May 2.

Against Rocky Point (9-5), Brian Pisaneschi was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete-game with five strikeouts mixed in. At bat, he went 2-for-4, driving in three runs. Jared Lettieri also had two hits in three at-bats.

In the Hurricanes (2-9 in League VI) shutout win at Amityville, Taylor McKillop was the pitching star, throwing strikes from start to finish in a complete game that blanked the Warriors. McKillop allowed only two hits, walked three and struck out three batters. Hunter Tracy’s RBI triple in the top of the first inning was the game-winning hit. Tracy had two hits in the game.

Westhampton Beach, which still has an outside chance of making the postseason if it can finish the year going undefeated, plays Miller Place (4-7) in a three-game series beginning on May 9 at Miller Place. The Hurricanes are home for game two on May 11 and game three is back at Miller Place on May 12. All games begin at 4 p.m.

Tough Losses for Boys Lacrosse

The boys varsity lacrosse team opened the season with a strong 5-3 overall record and although Westhampton has suffered three straight losses, their 4-6 League II conference record is still allowing the Hurricanes to stand on the playoff doorstep with three games remaining.

Solid goalkeeping by starting goalie Brian Corrigan (51 combined saves in the three losses and a very low 4.50 goals against average) along with steady scoring by Kevin Dean and Sid Looney among others, keeps Westhampton a legitimate threat to all opponents.

The Hurricanes play their next game at East Hampton/Bridgehampton on May 11 at 4:30 p.m.
