Sports Notebook: Shanna Heaney Dominates for Lady Baymen Track Team

Also, Lady Hurricanes lacrosse team topples John Glenn to finish strong season.

The Westhampton Beach girls’ varsity lacrosse team picked up a hard fought win against John Glenn on May 12 as the Lady Hurricanes outscored the Lady Knights 15-13, led by the efforts of Kristen Polan, Lexi Cable, Haley Laube, Zoe Recchion and Alexa Smith.

With 20 seconds remaining in the game and the score tied at 13, Polan scored her third goal of the game to give Westhampton a 14-13 lead. Less than 30 seconds earlier, Laube’s shot zipped past Glenn’s goalkeeper, signifying her second goal of the game and tying the score 13-13. Smith, who scored twice in the game and also had an assist, netted her second with seven seconds remaining in regulation for a much-appreciated insurance goal for the Lady Hurricanes.

Other standout performers included Cable (three goals), Recchion (two goals), Samantha Vickers (one goal), Ciara McKeon (one goal), Sarah Donohue (one goal) and Courtney Owen (assist). Devan Mandell was a clutch competitor in Westhampton’s goal, turning aside a game-high 10 saves as the Lady Hurricanes improved to 8-5 in Suffolk’s League II.

In their next game, on May 14, Westhampton suffered a tough 17-9 loss at home to Mt. Sinai, one of the league’s top teams, During the game, Laube net three goals with McKeon and Alexa Smith adding two each. The Lady Hurricanes finished the season with a winning record of 8-6 (9-7 overall) and saw Alexa Smith lead all players with a team-best 36 goals, as well as a team-high 12 assists.

Laube was close behind with 33 goals and seven assists while McKeon was third with 22 goals and five assists.

In Hampton Bays, it’s been a spectacular season for Shanna Heaney, who has excelled at an elite level from the start of the season to lead the girls’ varsity track and field team to a 3-3 finish in Suffolk League VII. Heaney posted one of her best times in the 1500 meters (five minutes, 16 seconds) as the Lady Baymen cruised to a 94-54 win over Amityville on May 5 and she also recorded a time of two minutes, thirty seconds in the 800 meters.

A 90-60 win at Wyandanch on May 11 saw Heaney slash a full five seconds off her 800 meters time as she motored her way to an impressive race finish time of two minutes, 25 seconds.
