Hampton Bays Native is College Field Hockey Star

Genna Kovar receives another athletic association honor.

Hofstra junior midfielder Genna Kovar has been named to the 2010 All-Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey first team in a vote by the league's head coaches, it was announced recently at the Colonial Athletic Association annual awards banquet.

"It means that I have a target on my back for the next year," joked Hampton Bays native Kovar, who is majoring in Liberal Arts and expects to become a physical education teacher.  She also wants to coach a Division I or Division II field hockey team.

Kovar earned her second All-Colonial Athletic Association first team selection after also receiving the award in 2009.  A Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America third team selection as a sophomore, Kovar started 14 games this season, missing the final four contests following hand surgery.  She was second on the Hofstra team in scoring with nine goals and six assists for 24 points. Kovar ranked seventh in the Colonial Athletic Association in points per game with a 1.64 average and was ninth in the conference in goals per game with a 0.64 mark.

A 2008 Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie team selection, Kovar tallied a career-high four goals in Hofstra Pride's 7-2 victory over Sacred Heart in September.  She also recorded two goals in games against Vermont and Fairfield, and had a season-high two assists against Siena.

As a star athlete, Kovar said she enjoyed her time at Hampton Bays High School because of the closeness she felt to her fellow students and teammates.  "It was a very small school so everyone knew each other," she said. Asked what advice she would give young women in sports, Kovar said,  "To just believe in yourself and follow your dreams."
