Fishing Report: The 'Fall Run' Is Just Days Away

The bass bite has improved dramatically in the Shinnecock Inlet.

Our fishing season has become the kind of challenge anglers are accustomed to on this island. As a result, those who fish have not been returning to the dock without dinner. Both Montauk Point and the waters off Orient have been producing striped bass, porgies, bluefish and the occasional false albacore. The reef off Shinnecock has given up recent fluke, sea bass, porgies and some triggerfish. Best of all, there's tons of bait in our locality, always faithfully followed by predators in search of a meal. Even blue-claw crabbers are giving a generous thumbs-up to this year's season. And the "Fall Run," is just days away.

Scott Jeffrey of in Hampton Bays reported that the bass bite has improved dramatically in the as well as the bay, and the fishermen who have been drifting using live baits have done well with fish to 25 pounds.

"The bridge is holding fish too, with worms and rubber baits showing good results," Jeffrey said. "Sea bass are holding strong on the local reef and wrecks and it's just a matter of getting out to them. Snappers and porgies are also in the canal.

East End's shore and surf fishing report indicated that the surf action continued to improve last week and Jeffrey said clam baits are still out-fishing the plugs and tins.

"Mullet are all over with fish on them, you just need them to move a little closer to shore. The albies have been making a showing at first light in the inlet and the fly guys are having some fun. The bass and big blue are taking residence in the inlet, with live bait and bucktails being the top producers."

Autumnal conditions gave customers on board the Shinnecock Star a mixed bag of surprises as large scup, a 27-inch fluke and quality amberjack with the usual sea bass came over the rails. All this action took place just outside the inlet last week.

Out in Orient Point, most anglers I spoke with said it was a shame that porgy season ends on Oct. 11. My advice is to get them now and freeze them so you can enjoy them on a cold, wintry night when you want some comfort food. Aboard the Prime Time III out of Orient, bottom fishing has been excellent when the weather gave some a break. Tons of porgies were the harvest this weekend with many keeper sea bass in the mix. Captains and boaters are exclaiming about how huge these fish are now in our shallow waters.

Grantly Bacchus traveled here from New Jersey to get a weekend pool fish winnner, just under 4 pounds. Last Sunday had many double-headers, despite the rough waves.

Out in Greenport there was steady action on the Captain's Table Charters this weekend, with a 30-inch striper and gorilla blues in Plum Gut on the flood tide. The northern edge of Plum Island had porgies to nearly 3 pounds as well as sea bass to 3 pounds.

Remember that blackfish season opens on Oct. 1 and the most impressive surprises appear in the early weeks of October in our local waters. Great fishing ahead.
