Fishing Report: Anglers Not Scared off by Strong Winds

They say fishing has been excellent for striped bass, bluefish, fluke, porgies and blowfish.

The winds might blow and the fog may settle, but East Enders know that fishing season has finally arrived in high gear. Warming temperatures have brought not only to the area, but more fish, which is exactly what fishermen been waiting for.

Scott Jeffrey over at in Hampton Bays reported that despite strong winds last week, fishing has been excellent for striped bass, bluefish, fluke, porgies and blowfish.

Jeffrey said there are tons of bass in the rips and trolling with parachutes, umbrella rigs and diamond jigs is always recommended. And experienced anglers know enough to watch the birds overhead. Stripers last week were weighing in at 30 pounds at East End Bait and Tackle and bluefish at whopping 15 pounds.

Those in search of big porgies along the northern side of Gardiner’s Island, Jeffrey said, should using a clam strip to get them.

Fluking has been steady on the south side in about 50 feet of water and, once that morning fog has burned off, fishing simply has exploded, Jeffrey said.

In the Shinnecock and Hampton Bays area, the clam chummers had a slow pick due to both the wind and rains of early last week. Over the holiday weekend, local charter boats had a very productive ratio of keepers, including both and the Shinnecock Lady.

John of the Shinnecock Star said he worked hard over the weekend to keep his customers on the fish, and it wasn’t unusual to see the boat limiting out, as expected.

On the Lady, Capt. Jim reported a mixed bag, with lots of action, landing ling and fluke. It’s important to note that with the changes in DEC regulations, flounder season officially ended on May 31 and sea bass season will now open on June 13.

Out in Orient Point, Capt. Sloan Gurney of The Black Rock had several big charter trips last week, with his customers limiting out on striped bass to 30-plus pounds. He said fishing has been great in both the Gut and the Race, regardless of the time of day. He did recommend, however, paying attention to the tides and local bait and tackle shops' recommendations for what the fish are biting on at the moment.

Porgy season officially opens for party boats on June 8 and these wonderful fish are not only relatively easy to catch, they are also super fun to reel in. With a bag limit of 10 per person, it’s a perfect fish for kids beginning their angling adventures.
