Aviators Record One Win, One Loss on Opening Weekend

Westhampton fell to Southampton Saturday but made up for it against North Fork Sunday.

The Westhampton Aviators began the with a 3-1 loss to the Southampton Breakers Saturday, but the next day posted a win against the defending HCBL champions, the North Fork Ospreys.

Westhampton starting pitcher Joe Lombardo took the loss at in Shinnecock Hills Saturday, but deserved a better fate after holding the Breakers to four hits over six innings and both runs he allowed were unearned. Lombardo walked two batters and struck out six. Chris Brook, the Aviators' starting first baseman, had two hits in the game to lead all players, and third baseman Aaron Cohn produced an RBI single in the top of the second inning to give Westhampton a 1-0 lead.

Westhampton improved to 1-1 with a colossal 12-1 win Sunday led by the hitting of center fielder Kevin Heller, designated hitter Ray Ortega, catcher Mike Rosenfeld and second baseman Taylor Mondshein.

Heller led all players with 5 RBIs, going 2-for-4 with a home run that cleared the fence at in Peconic as part of a 10-run inning by the red-hot hitting Aviators.

Ortega and Rosenfeld each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs; Mondshein went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and shortstop Kyle Lombardo and outfielder Joe Candela had two hits apiece.

Westhampton starting pitcher Blake Bagley picked up the win, scattering two hits through five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Zach Uher pitched two scoreless innings and Brandon Kuter threw a scoreless ninth.

The Aviators host Sag Harbor Monday at Hite Field at 5 p.m. and Riverhead on June 7.
