USA FAIR Demands Laura Ahearn of Parents for Megan's Law Retract NAMBLA Smear

USA FAIR Demands Laura Ahearn of Parents for Megan's Law Retract NAMBLA Smear, Says Comments Demonstrate Ahearn's Lack of Objectivity

February 19, 2013 - USA FAIR, Inc. (Families Advocating an Intelligent Registry) today demanded that Laura Ahearn, Executive Director of Parents for Megan's Law, immediately retract a statement she made to "Riverhead Local" reporter Denise Civiletti that Shana Rowan, USA FAIR's Executive Director, is a member of the North American Man Boy Love Association (NAMBLA).  The accusation was made in an article published Friday, February 15th regarding the recent $2.7 million sole-sourced contract awarded by Suffolk County to Parents For Megan's Law to help monitor the more than 1,000 former sex offenders residing in the county.

When asked to respond to USA FAIR's concerns about the propriety of a private victims’ advocacy group being granted quasi-policing authority and its lack of law enforcement or sex offender management experience, Ahearn responded that Rowan was "part of NAMBLA."  When Ahearn was asked for proof, she responded, "Just search her name on the Internet."

"The allegation that I am an advocate for man-boy love would be laughable, if it weren't so slanderous.  I have never been part of NAMBLA.  I find pedophilia to be repulsive and I have always supported age of consent laws.  For Ms. Ahearn to take an accusation made on an anonymous hate-site on the web and repeat it without any independent verification only underscores why USA FAIR believes she is unqualified to administer the Suffolk County contract.  Monitoring former offenders requires objectivity and placing a high value on evidence, neither of which Ms. Ahern has demonstrated by her unfounded personal attack," said Rowan.

"Rather than respond to our legitimate concerns about Parents for Megan's Law's qualifications to have been awarded this contract, Ms. Ahearn chose to repeat a lie about me and to tell a half-truth about my fiancé, stating that he "raped a six year old child".  Yes, his offense did involve a six year old child, but Ms. Ahearn conveniently left out that he was 12 at the time and also the victim of sexual abuse. To Laura Ahearn, context does not matter if it fails to serve her cause," concluded Rowan.

Rowan became active in sex offender law reform when she became engaged to a longtime friend she first met in high school who is on the registry.

Shana needs to sue for slander
John K Massaro February 19, 2013 at 08:03 pm
Why does she feel the need to talk of herself in third person? With all due respect, it makes her look ridiculous...

I think you're posting on the wrong forum...
That's two doors down that way >>>
John K Massaro February 19, 2013 at 08:22 pm
So let me see if I get this straight. A 12 year old boy raped a 6 year old girl, but it's okay because he was only 12 at the time? What kind of warped logic is that?
vahall February 19, 2013 at 08:58 pm
I do not know what exactly transpired between these two children, but it seems profoundly unjust that either of them is required to register as a sex offender. I believe you are missing the point of the post, John, by focusing on a ten or twenty year old offense. May I direct your attention to the impropriety and irresponsibility of a spokesperson for an organization just granted a very lucrative contract?
John K Massaro February 19, 2013 at 09:21 pm
Oh I totally agree with you on both points, Vahall. I just dont get Shaunas reasoning. Regardless of age, her boyfriend committed (spelling?) a henious & unforgivable crime. I doubt very much, at 12 years old & the victim being 6, that this was a simple case of boyfriend/girlfriend. There's more to this story than what's being told here. The fact that he was a supposed victim of abuse himself does not make him any more innocent of the crime he committed nor does it grant him any leniency. In other words, two wrongs do not make a right.
As for Miss Ahearn, that is totally unacceptable behavior for ANY spokesperson, let alone one in her position & the organization she stands for. Miss Ahearn sounds to me like she is nothing more than a bitter & immature woman, drumming up false accusations against those who's views don't match hers for her own personal agenda. She should be immediately replaced at her post with a person qualified & mature enough to handle it...
BarT February 19, 2013 at 09:30 pm
Rowan should sue for slander. Ahearn already admitted that her source is "the internet." And THIS woman received a three million dollar grant?!? I'd hate to be responsible for her books.
BarT February 19, 2013 at 09:39 pm
On second thought, instead of suing, Ahearn should be charged with a hate crime.
Frank T February 19, 2013 at 10:03 pm
I would be great if we heard both sides of the story not just FAIR aka Rowan. Also I am not sure why the Patch keeps posting her stories.
Shana Rowan February 19, 2013 at 10:43 pm
Alrighty. I almost never respond to comments on public forums but seeing as this has become more about my fiancee and I than the issue at hand, some clarification:
Mr. Massaro: You're free to have whatever opinion you like about my fiancee. However, you should also know that voluminous empirical evidence supports the idea that juvenile sex offenders a) rarely offend for predatory/pedophilic/sexual gratification reasons, and b) have even lower recidivism rates than adult sex offenders. You may find his crime unforgivable, but he is living in the community and will continue to do so just like every other person released from prison. Seeing as research supports him being an extremely unlikely threat to children - and he has a steady job, a loving fiancee, and an extensive support system - is it really worth it to you to endanger his, my and our family's well-being for the sake of revenge? Secondly - if a 12 year old was "raped" (in quotations, because he did not "rape" anyone) by a much older adult, I'm guessing you'd find that deplorable? If a 12 year old is capable of understanding the long-term ramifications of inappropriate sexual behavior, how can they possibly also be a victim who doesn't understand the long-term ramifications of sexual activity? Lastly, these are press releases posted on behalf of USA FAIR, not my personal opinion or blog. Hence the third person. Frank T: major media outlets have covered "the other side" extensively. Google it.

Ahern is a grandstander licking the coat tails of politicians
John K Massaro February 20, 2013 at 04:32 am
First off, may I ask you an honest question? For what exactly would I be exacting "revenge" on your boyfriend for? Secondly, a 12 year old boy is quite old enough to know right from wrong when it comes to sexual deviance. I had no intentions nor am I in any position to "judge" your boyfriend. I'm simply stating that your reasoning is a bit obtuse...
You need to relax, Shana. Despite the fact that I think you're a wee bit on the unstable side, I do however agree with you concerning Ms. Aherns actions & the fact that Meghans Law needs reforms to it's classifications...
John K Massaro February 20, 2013 at 04:38 am
Not to mention, how stupid does Ms Ahern's whole accusation sound? What would a woman be doing as a member of NAMBLA?
highhatsize February 20, 2013 at 05:53 am
This dog and pony show is just political PR. We are expected to believe that sex offenders can be placed in homeless shelters, one to each location, without having their lives threatened by the other residents. The reality is that this new "program" will simply make sex offenders choose true homelessness (and absolve Suffolk of the need to provide for them.)
Considering that the predictable outcome of Steve Bellone's plan will be to deprive the authorities of the knowledge of where these sex offenders are actually living, one might have expected Ms. Ahearn's group to object to it. It hasn't. Since there will be no sex offenders resident in county homeless shelters for it to monitor, it will have to find another use for the $2.7M.

OK, to summarize for the citizens that are paying for all this playtime... "Laura" who runs the shell scam disguised as Parent Fund for Megan's Law. was said to be a member of NAMBLA which is a predatory pedophile club. She denies it but confirms her fiance raped a 6 year old. "Shauna" from USA Lilith Fair gave her 2.7 million$ and wants it back. Shauna wrote this article then later writes she never responds to comments on public forums. Jackass, you wrote this crap. I have one simple question. Who is the moron that gives these imbiciles money and authority over anything. they are prime candidates for adult abortion.
John T February 20, 2013 at 08:58 pm
It is apparent that many of the well intentioned persons who have taken the time to post are not familiar with the media. There is oftentimes a large disconnect between what was actually said and what appears in print. Taken out of context to create controversy or through the application of "literary license " even the most innocuous remarks can appear incendiary. The facts are Shana is engaged to and living with a registered sex offender who sexually abused a 6 year old child. She has a blog entitled, "I love a Sex Offender". She was a member of RSOL (Reform Sex Offender Laws) one of the founders of which was a member of NAMBLA. She has stated that she wants to eliminate the NY State Sex Offender Registry (NBC-WKTV News Channel 2 March 20, 2012). Laura Ahearn has been working with victims of sexual assault in Suffolk County for almost 20 years. Laura believes in the necessity for the sex offender registry and that sex offenders should be monitored. Sounds pretty simple to differentiate.
Hope and Change February 20, 2013 at 09:11 pm
OK, thanks for clarifying John T. So, The $2.7mil actually was donated to NAMBLA By Laura Ahern through her scam shell organization called Sex offenders for Megan's Law. I still dont understand why Shauna would approve of the rape of a 6 year old under any circumstances. what drives these sick criminals to such acts??
John Gruber February 20, 2013 at 09:39 pm
this article clearly states
"Her fiancé, Geoff, served four years in prison after being convicted of sodomizing and inappropriately touching his six year old step-sister while he was a teenager" There's really something wrong if you're knit-picking between "sodomizing" and "rape". And you can't say with 100% certainty that any of these people who commit these heinous crimes WON'T do it again, so I don't know about you, but I'm not ok with giving someone who has already victimized someone the benefit of the doubt. They don't deserve it. http://www.wwnytv.com/news/local/Feedback-Woman-Fights-for-Rights-Of-Sex-Offenders--Families-147190125.html
John K Massaro February 20, 2013 at 09:40 pm
Thank you for clarifying John. I knew there was more to this story than what was being told in here.
Level 2 - Moderate risk of repeat offense. As I stated before, I do believe the classification of who is a sex offender as opposed to who is a sexual predator needs to be worked on, I still believe there is no reasonable excuse for rape or sodomy, regardless of the past history of said registrant.
Larry Levine March 2, 2013 at 06:56 pm
The following is an excerpt from Marc Klaas' article, "The Re-Victimization of Innocents: Criminal Justice Run Amok!." Shana Rowan is the Executive Director of USA FAIR, a non-profit organization she founded that is dedicated to defending the indefensible: registered sex offenders. According to her official biography, Shana’s passion for registered sex offenders is personal and very close to her heart. She is engaged to marry a registered sex offender named Geoff. His support gave Shana the strength she needed to leave a long-term abusive relationship. Now his past is making it impossible for them to move on with their lives. In her biography Ms. Rowan recounts his criminal behavior and portrays her fiancé as the true victim and she totally dismisses the very young half-sister that he serially abused. She argues that she and Geoff are victims of bad policy, and that sex offender registration and community notification laws (Megan’s Law) punish hundreds of thousands for crimes that a very small percentage of people might commit. She forgets that each and every person on the sex offender registration list has been convicted of, not committed as there is a vast distinction, at least one sex crime, almost always against a child or a woman. Citing studies that demonstrate that sex offenders have a very low recidivism rate Ms. Rowan ignores the best known study of all....read the rest of the article at http://klaaskids.org/blog/?p=1012

The California chapter of the"" Reform Sex Offender Laws organization"""RSOL will have its first Orange County meeting later this month in Buena Park.
The national organization attributes much of its growth to the late Tom Reeves, a founding member of the ""North American Man/Boy Love Association"" NAMBLA. Reeves, who also went by "Alex Marbury", died of heart failure on Feb. 19. He was 72 years old. Shana Writes: I have agreed to be the Facebook page admin and "manager" for the"" NY chapter of RSOL!""" I am very excited and have some ideas, although I am sure that there is a lot I haven't thought of, either. I just created it a little while ago, and plan to really get going on it tomorrow (right now it's just the logo and basic information). Do I hear a duck quackin Shana????
Valerie Parkhurst March 30, 2013 at 11:29 am
as I have previously written a hundred times Your boyfiend must be the only sexually violent offender who the state WAITED to Prosecute from the age of twelve until he was an adult for his crime??? Jesus Shana do you actually think the public is that stupid?
Valerie Parkhurst April 19, 2013 at 09:22 am
amazing a bunch of convicts and or their pillow partners demanding an apology from a group of Victims??
Valerie Parkhurst June 8, 2013 at 10:25 am
Shana Rowan is a Liar and a fraud . She constantly quotes false re-offend rates and out of date statistics by less than partial parties. The truth is, there is no one definitive study that nails true recidivism rates. Recidivism is based wholly on the "preferences of the offender" and the opportunities that are open to the offender. Even the therapist will admit that this area of expertise is still in the stone age and "containment" is the only sure way to lower victim counts. Shana Rowan thinks if she repeats something often enough and loud enough it will become fact. Shana Rowan is a threat to America's Families everywhere. She is a self serving activist for no other reason than the guy she chooses to "bang" is classified as a sexually violent offender with his victim being only 6 years old. She can attempt to paint a pink bow around the freaks who commit these crimes all she wants, the daily headlines of offenders using our citizens as a sexual buffet table indicate otherwise. Shana Rowan's time would be better spent "Talking these freaks down" from their crimes, not attempting to minimize them.
