Westhampton Beach Students Participate in National Walk To School Day

Students strapped on their sneakers and hiked to school on Wednesday.

Westhampton Beach Elementary School students participated in National Walk to School Day on Wednesday morning with everyone from students, parents, grandparents, faculty, and staff joining in to walk from Waldbaum's to the school.

The event was organized by the district's Wellness Committee with the Westhampton Beach Police Department helping to provide a safe route to school.

National Walk to School Day, according to iwalk.com was started in 1997 in an effort to "build awareness for the need for walkable communities." The event went international in 2007. To date, more than 4,000 walk to school events have been registered and the first-ever bike to school event will take place on May 9, 2012.
