Westhampton Beach Schools Go Solar

A new, photovoltaic system will generate 62,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually.

In an ongoing effort to be green, the Westhampton Beach School District has added 25-kilowatt photovoltaic solar panels to the roofs of the district's and .

The solar panels, which were funded entirely by a $392,000 Energy Efficiency Improvement Grant from from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, will generate 62,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, offsetting the district's energy needs.

"The Westhampton Beach School District has long been concerned about the environment," said , superintendent. "From undertaking energy audits, to upgrading boilers and lighting in our schools, to student-led recycling efforts, our school community has taken a leadership role in the energy conservation and sustanibility movement."

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held last Friday.
