Westhampton Beach Schools Facing Million Dollar Budget Gap

Cuts will be discussed at board meeting at 7 p.m.

The Westhampton Beach School District is a little over $1 million shy of closing its budget gap.

"We need to close the gap in order to adopt a budget that falls within our allowable tax levy limit," said Mike Radday, superintendent of schools.

According to Radday, the district is facing a loss of $140,000 in state aid and $220,000 from a tuition agreement with the Tuckahoe school district.

In addition, Radday said teacher retirment costs are projected to go up 34.7 percent, health insurance up $548,084, and contractual teacher salaries are slated to increase by $1,065,775.

The district did attempt to negotiate with the teacher's union for a salary freeze, however, the union rejected the request, according to a report on 27east.
