School Budget Voters Guide

Budget information for school districts from Westhampton to Hampton Bays.

On May 15, residents are being asked to cast a ballot for their respective school district budgets and to elect school board members. The following is information on the budgets being presented for a vote in the Hampton Bays, Westhampton Beach, Quogue, and East Quogue School Districts.

Hampton Bays School District

 has proposed a $45.8 million budget, which carries with it a  2.01 percent increase in spending.  For taxpayers that translates to a 1.87 percent tax rate increase. In dollars, the tax rate looks to raise taxes to $11.70 per $1,000 assessed value. 

Also in the Hampton Bays School District, two incumbent candidates, Warren Booth and Christopher Garvey, are running unopposed for three year terms.

Westhampton Beach School District

 has proposed a $51.8 million budget that includes a 2.84 percent  increase and will require the support of 60 percent of taxpayers because it pierces the state’s tax cap.  For homeowners the budget translates to a 2.89  percent tax rate increase. In dollars, the tax rate look to raise taxes to $5.69 increase per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Also in the Westhampton Beach School District, Gordon A. Werner and Joyce L. Donneson are running for Beecher Halsey's five-year seat. Halsey is not seeking reelection.

Quogue School District

s asking voters to approve a $7.68 million budget, which includes a 1.72 percent increase in spending. The increase translates to a tax levy increase of 1.76 percent, which in dollars equates to $1.97 more per $1,000 of assessed valuation. 

Also in the Quogue School District, Dr. Anael Alston is running unopposed for a seat being vacated by board member Walter Stockton.

East Quogue School District

is asking voters to approve a $22.4 million budget, which reflects a 1.5 percent .  The increase translates to a tax levy increase of 2.2 percent, which in dollars equates to $10.19 per $1,000 assessed value.

Also in East Quogue, incumbent Kathryn Tureski is running unopposed for a term of three years.
