Hampton Bays Middle School students continued a new tradition of taking history out of the text books by honoring area veterans each month by paying tribute to Vincent Handal, a World War II Navy veteran on Dec. 7 — Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
Handal traveled the world while in the Navy and was awarded the Ancient Order of the Deep for his service. He served for 14 months, sailing to Guam, Saipan, Hong Kong, Okinawa, Arabia, Pompeii and many other exotic locales before he was honorably discharged in 1946.
Handal now joins numerous other veterans who have been honored by middle school students, including Walter Flaherty, Ray Rand, Joseph Lach, Marilouse Kelly and James Papadrea, through the program, which commenced in November 2011.
