Kiwanis Starts Collection Drive For Unwanted Instruments

The organization plans to donate the instruments to schools in need.

It's no secret that many area school districts are struggling and in most cases, the first programs cut when budgeting are music-related. That's why the Kiwanis Club of Westhampton has decided to step in and help.

This week, the 22-year-old Kiwanis Club kicked off a musical instrument collection drive in an effort to provide instruments to the area school districts, including Westhampton Beach and Eastport, for students to use.

"There are children in our community who can't afford to rent the instruments required to play in the band because money is tight for so many, and the school budgets have also been cut," said Ursula Berlinger, Kiwanis club secretary.

Berlinger said Kiwanis club members are willing to pick-up any musical instrument donations. She can be reached via e-mail at uberl2010@optimum.net or e-mail Michelle Beardsley at Travel.michelle@yahoo.com.
