Hampton Bays Students of the Month Honored

Well-rounded kids set an example for their peers.

Three Hampton Bays School District students, one from the elementary school, one from the middle school and one from the high school, received October Student of the Month honors at the Nov. 9 school board meeting, according to school district spokesperson.

Third grader Jack Gilbert, sixth-grader Reilly Gwinn, and high school junior Vanessa Alvarez each received a plaque and words of praise from their respective principals.

Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer said Jack was nominated for Student of the Month by his teacher, Richard Berglin, for his citizenship and leadership. Jack is a member of the student council and K-Kids and plays in the local PAL football league. His favorite subjects are math and physical education. His career goal is to "protect Tom Brady as a member of the New England Patriots," Meyer said.

Middle School Principal Dennis Schug praised Reilly saying, "Reilly is a special kid, a natural leader and a hard worker." He also said that Reilly is a model student who is "humble, works like crazy, and does her best every single day." Schug added that she loves science class and is "tenacious" on the soccer field.

High School Principal Christopher Richardt reported that Vanessa is such a committed student that she was worried about missing her SAT prep class while picking up her Student of the Month honor. Vanessa is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, SADD and the Key Club. Richardt said that after graduation she plans to become a school psychologist.
