Hampton Bays Resident Retires From Coaching SJC Sports

Gary Smith's final home game will be on Oct. 22.

Gary Smith, a alum and Hampton Bays resident, will retire Saturday after 26 years of coaching sports programs.

The school announced that Smith's final home game will be against SUNY Purchase on Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. in the Medford Sports Complex on Horsebock Road in Medford.

"Gary Smith has done so much for SJC and all of the student-athletes that have passed through his programs," said Don Lizak, director of athletics at the Long Island campus in Patchogue, in a release. "We celebrate his accomplishments and are grateful for his 26 years of service and dedication."

Over his career, Smith has coached both men's soccer and women's softball programs. In 2000, Smith became the first coach to lead a team to a Skyline title and compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament with the women's soccer team. Smith took the men's soccer team to the Skyline championship and won in 2008, becoming the first coach to take two different teams to an NCAA tournament.

After Saturday's game, a reception will be held for Smith in St. Joseph's College's McGann Center.
