Gift of Knowledge Helps Kids Give Back

Hampton Bays third graders learn about volunteerism.

Third-graders from Hampton Bays Elementary School learned about the importance of giving back during a recent meeting with Stephen Matlin of the Southampton Kiwanis Club.  As part of the school's annual Book Drop gathering, Matlin stopped by the school to hand out copies of A Student's Dictionary to each of the 125 students, the third-grade teachers and Elementary School Principal Mark Meyer on behalf of Southampton Kiwanis.

The dictionary drop was part of a national Kiwanis program called The Dictionary Project, which encourages children to seek out knowledge.  The children were also introduced to the K-Kids Club at the school, a group that performs a number of community-centered assistance programs.  The students were told that they are now eligible for the program and were encouraged to become volunteers in their community.

Meyers stressed that service to the community is a vital part of learning and being an exemplary Hampton Bays student and resident.

"We should all be learning how to give back, just like the Kiwanis do," Meyers said. "That's always how the group works."

The Kiwanis Club is an international organization founded in 1915 that serves communities in more than 70 countries.
