2-Hour Delay for Hampton Bays Schools Tuesday Morning

Icy roads expected for the morning commute.

Hampton Bays students can sleep in tomorrow as anticipated icy road conditions due to a dramatic overnight temperature drop have prompted a delayed opening for schools.

The school district notified parents on Monday evening with the news of the delay. Students should report to bus stops two-hours later than normal time.

The additional time, the school district wrote on its website will "allow the sun to rise, providing greater visibility for drivers, walkers, and students at bus stops, and allow the Town Highway Department additional time to properly sand the roads."

As of 8:00 p.m. Monday, Westhampton Beach, Quogue and East Quogue School Districts have not announced delays.

During the overnight hours, closer to midnight, temperatures will are anticipated to drop to the 20s .

Then, around, 3 a.m., an icy decline into the mid-teens is expected over most of Long Island.

The most dramatic drop will be reported heading closer to sunrise; around 6 a.m, temperatures will drop to the upper single digits across most of Nassau County and the western half of Suffolk, with temps in the lower to mid-teens on the East End.

On Tuesday, around 9 a.m., the morning commute will be cold, with single digits expected across all of western Suffolk.

The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny and windy weather throughout most of Tuesday for the area with highs around 13. West winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and wind chill values as low as 14 below.
