Old Glory Flies Again

It appears as though someone has vandalized the Park in East Quogue. The incident would have occurred Thursday night or early Friday morning, July 11 or 12. The vandals took down American flags, destroyed flag poles, and appear to have stomped on the flags.  Stomping on the flag is considered desecration of the flag.  According to 18 USC § 700, desecration of the flag of the United States is a federal offense and comes with a penalty of up to one year in jail.  Not to mention, they are property belonging to the Town of Southampton. The flags have been replaced and are once again flying proudly.

In America we are afforded many rights.  Freedom of speech and expression are among them. The government cannot prosecute someone who is burning the flag in protest.  Many, while not agreeing with the message, will stand up for that person’s right to do so. That is part of what makes this country so wonderful. However, to desecrate the American flag for no reason is incredibly offensive.

Our flag flies representing freedom and our way of life.  It has been protected by the blood shed by many to keep it flying.  They spend their lives keeping us safe so that we may not live in fear but in freedom. As an American and a mother, I am grateful every day for all of our armed forces personnel, past, present and future. To stomp the flag for no reason is to send a message saying that those freedoms, so bravely fought for, are not held dear nor are they cherished.  It also shows a stunning lack of respect for another person’s property.

The East Quogue Park became a reality due to the hard work of the citizens of this town and the Southampton Town Government.  As taxpayers, it belongs to us all.   I am in no way trying to sensationalize this incident or create a copycat.  However, to let it pass unnoticed is a worse crime.

East Quogue may never find out who did this to our park.  If the vandals have a message, let us hear it. This way we can have a good old fashioned American debate.  If there is no reason, we have to ask ourselves the question…what does our future hold for us all?
