Destination; Battleship Cove

The East Quogue Cub Scout Pack 261 adventure to Battleship Cove, Massachusetts.

For a majority of the boys of East Quogue Cub Scout Pack 261, school ended in June with one goal in mind Destination; Battleship Cove. Through out this summer's unpredictable weather of extreme heat and rain storms, a dedicated crew raised money for this adventure with a car wash, a yard sale and a bake sale at one of the Concerts on the Green in East Quogue. Their hard work paid off and this past Saturday, around 7am, they along with Cub Master, Kevin Rushlo, Committee Chair, Phillip Keith, and fathers, boarded a yellow school bus driven by Joan, the bus driver, heading north to Fall River, Massachusetts. They arrived for their over night adventure, got settled in and took off to explore the USS Massachusetts BB59, USS Joseph P. Kennedy, where they met a Veteran who served on the vessel, JR DD850, USS Lionfish SS298, PT Boats and the German ship the Hiddensee. After a dinner in the Wardroom it was off to knot tying and Morse code class then a storyteller after that they went to the bunks, that were occupied by US sailors in World War ll, to sleep since Reveille was at 6am.

The pack would like to thank everyone who supported their efforts by getting their car washed, buying baked goods and shopping for treasures at their yard sale. A big Thank You to Tate's Cookies, who's donated double chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, were a big hit at the bake sale and Christopher F. Bean, the Southampton Town Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, who gave the Pack permission to sell the baked good in the park.

Erik Luhmer, the pack Treasurer and organizer of this trip said "The boys had a wonderful learning experience, not just about American history and warships, but also about working together toward and achieving goals through hard work and dedication, it's all part of being a cub scout and eventually a boy scout, they will remember this experience the rest of their lives."

The boys are ready for that inevitable question on the first day of school: What did you do over Summer Vacation? And who knows, maybe Mr. Keith will have been inspired by this summer's adventure to write another book.
