Bettas Are Great First Pets

Find out how easy it is to care for a betta fish.

Bettas are known for a child's first pet, they are easy to take care of, no need for a huge tank, feed them every couple of days, and cleaned once a week. It can't get any easier than that for your kid.

Bettas are originally from the Japan/China area and hop from mud puddle to mud puddle. So these little guys are used to small swimming areas, so no need for a huge tank.

Bettas are also one of few fish that can breathe outside air so no need for an air pump. Bettas will actually swim to the top of the tank and get oxygen that way. They also come in so many cool colors such as blue, red, green, yellow, white, black, brown, pink, purple — you name it, they can come it that color.

The colors we recommend to parents for young children are the full blue or red bettas, because they are the most known color and, just in case something happens to your kids fish, they are a lot easier to find.

With the cleaning, you just dump out their water, clean the little bowl with just hot water, refill with room temperature bottle water, add a couple of stress coat, then just put your fish back in.

The reason why you use stress coat is because when transporting the fish, they get stressed and when that happens, they lose their slim coating and can die from it, so stress coat justs adds on their slim coating back on.

You only give them 5 to 6 pellets of food every couple of days and yes, only that many, over feeding is the number one reason peoples fish die so quickly. A normal lifespan for a betta is 3 to 4 years, but they can live longer.

I, Bryana, had one for just over 6 years.
