BLOG: I Fear For The Future of the US Postal Service

The joys and pitfalls of communication today. The art of the handwritten note, and my fear that we are becoming a rude as a society.

When I was young, I can remember going shopping with my mother at McCabes in Riverhead.  I loved that store!  All I wanted was a bunch of notebooks and some pens. I have always been rather obsessed with stationery, stickers and pens for some reason.  I adore writing, and love the feel of a handwritten note.  I also am obsessed with electronic gadgets and the Internet and sometimes it is difficult to incorporate the two into my hectic life.  With the convenience and speed of the Internet, email and social networking, I have to wonder —  Does anyone handwrite anything anymore?

Let me be the first to say that I spend entirely way to much time at my computer. I shop-A LOT, I Facebook, I Tweet, and I Pin.  It is how I earn a living.  I don't think I could be without my iPhone for more than thirty minutes, yet it still makes me giddy, when I get to dig out my stationery, pen, and stamp to write a little something to a friend or a thank you for a gift.  I can appreciate the fact that businesses and some individuals could not function without the use of high tech things like email and it is easy and convenient to just simply send a text to your spouse or friend, but when people start to rely soley on texting, and emailing, I feel we are losing something as a society.  Some of our manners have, without question, "Left The Building."  A handwriten note, to me says that, 'you matter, you are worth the time it takes to write a note'. It's more personal to receive a get well card or note than an email or text.   I am definately the minority, I know this.  I don't think there are many people who buy personalized thank you's for their three-year-olds.  I do have a monogram, and personalization obsession, as well as an online shopping addiction. I can't help it, maybe I need an intervention, who knows.

So lets keep the Post Office in business, write somethng, put a stamp on it, and walk it down to your mailbox! I will even accept hate mail if it gets people writing.
