Village Ice Skating Rink to Be Relocated This Winter

Trustees feel the marina, in its current state, is too dangerous.

With Hurricane Sandy causing devastating damage to the Westhampton Beach Village Marina, village trustees said last Wednesday that it is no place for kids to play and that the village's ice skating rink must be relocated.

"The marina took a big hit from the storm. I am just not so sure it would be a good idea to install the rink at that location because of safety reasons," said Trustee Patricia DiBenedetto.

During the discussion, village board members agreed that the great lawn might be a suitable location to set up the rink, which was installed for the first time at the marina in 2011.

The rink, which was purchased for $4,500 along with a $800 ice shaver, is designed to be moved at anytime.

Mayor Conrad Teller suggested that the ice rink only be set up if the weather is cold enough for a freeze.

"I think if it stays cold, then we can look at the great lawn," he said.
