Town To Sponsor Bully Prevention Seminars

October is bullying prevention month.

In an effort to do its part to prevent bullying, the Town of Southampton is once again sponsoring several bully prevention seminars throughout the month of October, which is bullying prevention month. 

The seminars, according to Councilwoman Christine Scalera, are aimed at "bringing attention and awareness to those harmed by bullying, and enhance action already taken by school districts."

This will be the second year, the town will host the seminars. This year's seminars will focus on cyber-bullyng and also feature a an anti-bullying logo contest, sponsored by the town's youth bureau. 

Last year’s events were a great success, but as the problem continues to exist, often with traumatic and even tragic consequences, It is my hope that these seminars continue to inform, provide strategies and tools and perhaps most importantly create awareness for school administrators, teachers, parents and our kids “, said Scalera.

The following is the schedule of seminars

Oct. 8
At 6:30 p.m. at the Hampton Bays Senior Center guest speaker Jamie Isaccs will discuss her own experience with bullying and what she did to overcome it. The Youth Bureaus Act TWO drama troop will also present the youth perspective on bullying through drama and discussion. 

Oct. 16
Cynthia Redmond will present to schools administrators, faculty and personnel an introduction to the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program Trainer at the Hampton Bays Middle School at 3:30 pm. This program is for school personnel only and will give an overview of the Olweus bullying program, understanding bullying and its impact in schools, practical tips when dealing with bullying, and a one year check up on the Dignity for All Students Act and the Cyber-bullying amendment. Oct. 23

At the Hampton Bays Senior Center at 6:30 p.m., Detective Rory Forrestal of the Suffolk County Police Department will conduct a presentation on Cyber-bullying and web crimes and what parents and youth can do to when dealing with cyber-bullying.
