Town May Only Partially Preserve Neptune's Property

A hearing on the possible has been adjourned until Dec. 10.

The Town of Southampton may not purchase the 2.8-acre Dune Road night-club Neptune's for $3.2 million.

At an public hearing held on Tuesday on the possible purchase, Southampton Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst announced that the town is in discussions with community members about another plan that could result in the re-use of the Neptune's building as a restaurant.

"I can assure you though that we will move forward with some kind of preservation and change of use there," said Throne-Holst, adding that the town wishes to protect the environment and use its community preservation funds wisely.

Throne-Holst indicated that both area Chamber of Commerc leaders and restaurants owners have expressed interest in creating an establishment at Neptune's, similar to East Quogue's Dockers and Oaklands in Hampton Bays.

"We want to support economic revitalization in Hampton Bays," said Throne-Holst. "We need to find a happy medium."

To that end, Throne-Holst moved adjourn the public hearing until Dec. 10 at 6:00 p.m. — the same time and date of a scheduled Canoe Place Inn hearing — to allow time for talks to continue.

Whatever is decided, residents who stood to talk about the Neptune's proposal said they are thrilled that the town is even considering a purchase of the club.

The reason, they said, is that the club has become a hot-spot for drunks and drug users and that the town's cops are being used as the club's personal security guards.

"This will be a wonderful conclusion to a serious problem, said Sally Pope a nearby neighbor.

Robin Eshaghpour, who lives next door to Neptune's said, "This place has been a disaster for many years.  By purchasing it, the town will eliminate a tremendous about of police resources"
