Highway Supt.: Appointed or Elected?

Public hearing has been set for Aug. 14 to consider a possible November referendum.

A public hearing has been set for Aug. 14 to consider a possible November referendum which could abolish the Department of General Services and create of a Department of Public Works in the .

If approved by the Town Board this month and by voters Nov. 6, the referendum would grant the Town Board authority to appoint in 2014 the position of superintendent of highways — currently an elected post chosen by voters.

The consolidation of the into the Public Works Department would be done for fiscal purposes and to promote efficiency, according to Town Supervisor .

What are your thoughts? Is the proposed referendum a good idea? Should the highway superitendent be appointed or elected?

Elected. I don't care to wait until the next big snowstorm to find out Frank spent all the plow money on something else.

They are voting at the same hearing? So the public hearing means nothing then.

This is a power play by Town Supervisor Petrone to control a large number of Town Employees. The people of the Town of Huntington should not give up their right to elect the Highway Superintendent. As a former, now retired Highway Department employee, I know that the Highway Department is not always run in the best way possible. Mistakes are made, decisions are sometimes based on political convenience and feuding between the Town Board and Superintendent of Highways affects productivity and services. In the end though, the Highway Department services always get performed in a timely and effective manner and the issues of snow storms, floods and other periods of severe weather and emergencies are handled in a manner assuring the residents the safest and most effective response. Consolidating the two largest departments in the Town of Huntington invites, cronyism, corruption and an unhealthy level of power placed in one place, namely with the Town Supervisor. While I did not always agree with Superintendent Naughton, he did his job honestly and in his mind to his best ability. The people of the Town of Huntington should not fall into the political trap being set by Supervisor Petrone and other members of the Town Board. Everytime a right is sacrificed a bit of freedom is taken away. Keep the right to elect the Highway Superintendent and your freedom of choice.
