Southampton Town Notes: Cold War Veterans' Exemption Approved

Town Board members voted unanimously to approve the tax exemption.

Just 45 minutes long, Tuesday night's Southampton Town Board meeting might have been the shortest board meeting in the town's history, board members agreed.  All resolutions were approved unanimously.

Here are five agenda highlights: 

1. Cold War Veterans' Exemption Approved

The Southampton Town Board approved a resolution that provides a property tax exemption for cold war veterans. According to Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst, the exemption is something that the tax receiver's office has been honoring; however, it has never been formally adopted. Vietnam veterans were on hand during the adoption of the resolution, saying they are in full support of it.

2. First-Time Homebuyer Tax Exemption Approved

A hearing on a proposed extension of a tax exemption for first time homebuyers was held with no members of the public choosing to speak. The resolution was later approved, allowing first-time homebuyers, who meet certain criteria, to apply for an exemption through Dec. 31, 2016.

3. Volunteers Appointed to Various Boards

The town board appointed a number of town residents to volunteer advisory board including, Michael Charrier, Tim Rumph, Thomas Downing, Jr., William Wright and Theodore Jankowski to the Architectural Review Board; Harry Ludlow, Tom Rickenback, Scott Horowitz to the Conservation Board; Maureen Sutton, Michelle Le-Moal Gray and Sgt. Susan Ralph to the Ethics Board; Sally Spanburgh, Susan Clark, Edward Wesnofske, and Nancy Mullen to the Historic Districts and Landmarks Board; Steven Kenny to the Housing Authority; Anthony D'Italia, as chair of the Licensing Review Board; Dennis Finnerty as chair of the Planning Board; George Kidmore to the Planning Board; Herb Phillips as chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals; and Denise O'Brian to the Zoning Board of Appeals.

4. Retirements Accepted

Thanking them for their service, the Southampton Town Board accepted the retirements of Barbara Huffman, clerk typist in the , and Anthony Tenaglia, captain of the department.

5.Highway Expenditures Approved

The town board as approved an agreement with the town's to spend $3.9 million in 2012 for improvement of roadways in Bridgehampton, Noyac, North Sea, Hampton Bays, East Quogue and Westhampton. Another $18,000 was approved for general repairs on town roads.
