Republican Chairman: 'Brandt Would Have Been a Sacrificial Lamb'

John Jay LaValle said the Suffolk GOP committee would be wasting Jeremy Brandt's time if it put him up as a candidate to challenge New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr.

If the Suffolk County Republican Party had put Jeremy Brandt, of Hampton Bays, up against Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. this November, it would have been a waste of time, Suffolk County Republican Chairman John Jay LaValle said on Thursday afternoon.

Though Brandt, a plumber who grew up in Sag Harbor, has some great potential, said LaValle, he would have been a "sacrificial lamb."

LaValle said he believes Brandt did not have enough backing or the necessary funds to run a competitive race against Thiele, who is seeking his ninth term two-year.

"The party doesn't have the money to fund that race," LaValle said.

In addition, LaValle said, the decision was made because the Republicans have been working closely with Thiele, a registered member of the Independence Party, on a number of important issues.

"Thiele was a Republican for most of his career," LaValle said. "And he has continued to be supportive of our Republican initiatives and Republican senators."

Upon learning that LaValle failed to sign a Wilson Pakula, a document in which a party grants its nomination to a non-member, Brandt, a registered Conservative, opted to step down as a candidate.

On Wednesday Brandt told Patch he wasn't sure why LaValle had refused him as a candidate, but said he understands the business and that there would be other races.

Where are our new generation of leaders? Waiting for enough money to run against incumbents that get squishy the longer they're in office? We can raise the money needed to run against Thiele, given the opportunity to get behind a (small c) conservative candidate. LaValle has let us all down, not only by not endorsing a promising young candidate, but in failing to field someone of strong character to run against the incumbent. Thiele support many issues anathema to conservatives.

This is a failure of leadership, if this ass LaValle is worried about money he shouldn't; I won't be sending any to the Suffolk GOP, none of us should, send it to the candidate.

The true answer is that John J LaValle is a puppet for his uncle Ken LaValle they both need to be removed from office. Ken LaValle is a personal friend of Fred Theil and that is why they wouldnot put him on the Republican line .We need to get rid of the party bosses are corrupt .

What a shame this country is becoming! I have decided that I will vote democrat this time around or whoever is running against theile after reading what lavalle has said. We need term limits at every level of goverment, from elected officilas o the appointed officials. This way someone like Mr. Brandt would have a chance at running for office in a country were he is a law abiding, tax paying citizen. Running for office should not a privaledge for those who have the right connections of the larger bank account. Each campaign should also have a spending cap on it. Just imagine the turnover of new ideas instead of the same old crap we are orced to see in office.

Thiele showed more support for his democrat pal Bishop than he did for poor Randy during the fourth of July parade in Southampton Village, as the two lefties walked side by side as Randy picked up the rear.... right next to Brandt!
