Park Between the Lines, Or Else

Be careful where you park at the beach this summer.

The Village of Westhampton Beach approved a new law that makes it easier for cops to hand out tickets to anyone not parked between the lines at the village beach.

The law, according to village attorney Richard Richard Haefeli, now allows village police to ticket cars parked crooked and out of the lines.

"We have run into problems at the beach where people are not parking in spaces," said Haefeli.

In addition to the parking tickets, the village also approved a law that ensures that residents don't take advantage of beach passes.

The law requires that beach stickers stay on a single car during a given season — no swapping is allowed.

According to Haefeli, there have been instances at the beach where stickers issued for a specific license plate and have been found on other cars.

"The language in our code wasn't clear on that," said Haefeli.

Both laws were approved after public hearings were held on Thursday evening with no residents standing to voice support or opposition.
