Gabreski Airport, County Center to Produce Solar Energy

Suffolk County's Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach and its county center in Riverhead will soon be solar energy production sites.

On Monday, Suffolk County officials announced that they have selected SunEdison of California, from 13 bidders to install solar systems at both sites as part of a partnership between the county and LIPA's through the energy's Clean Solar Initiative II program.

According to the county, SunEdison will look to build a multi Megawatt project at the airport, with a smaller rooftop system at the Riverhead County Center.

Both projects will be subject to lease negotiations with the county and a Januar 31 LIPA auction that will determine price points.

“I have been a champion of energy efficiency and the use of clean, renewable energy,” said County Executive Bellone. “As the solar industry matures and the need to diversify our energy mix intensifies, it makes sense for the county to propose projects on municipal land that cannot be developed otherwise.”
