FEMA Cuts $1.7 Million Check to Southampton Town

For the manhours, equipment, materials and contract costs associated with debris removal after Superstorm Sandy, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has granted $1,680,101 to Southampton Town, according to a statement from Southampton's legislators on the federal level.

Rep. Tim Bishop, a native of Southampton, and Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand said the funding will account for a majority of the vegetative debris removal cost to the town.

“I am quite sure this is the most timely reimbursement we have ever received — a tremendous credit to our federal representatives for their fast work, and to our department heads for quickly and thoroughly coordinating volumes of documentation in order to apply for this refund,” Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst is quoted as saying.

Bishop said that a successful recovery will require the continue cooperation of all levels of government. “Southampton Town officials responded quickly and comprehensively to help the community recover after Superstorm Sandy, so I’m delighted that my office, along with our colleagues in New York’s congressional delegation, secured federal funding to promptly reimburse the town for its hard work and protect local taxpayers"

Schumer said the reimbursement makes sure that town residents are not completely on the hook for the expenses of the massive cleanup effort. Gillibrand called the reimbursement a "vital step forward as we continue to meet Long Island's needs to recover and rebuild.”
