Feeding Geese Could Soon Be a Crime

The Southampton Town Board will hold a public hearing on the new law on June 26 at 6 p.m.

In an effort to curtail the number of geese and reduce pathogen exposure and nitrogen loading in surface water around Southampton Town, the Southampton Town Board is looking make it illegal for residents to feed the flock on public property.

On Tuesday, Southampton Town board members passed a resolution calling for a public hearing on their proposal that makes it a crime to "distribute or otherwise disseminate on public property any type of foodstuff, including, but not limited to, corn, wheat, or other grains, bread, crackers, popcorn, scraps, or any other substance or foodstuff so as to make it available to be eaten by a goose or geese."
