UPDATE: Electronic Device Appears Mysteriously on Bayport Stop Sign

There's a camera-looking antenna and equipment box secured to bottom of sign.

The electronic device attached to one of the stop signs at the four-way stop at McConnell Road and Seaman Avenue in Bayport is a traffic monitoring device and not a 'red light' camera to catch drivers blowing stop signs.

Several Patch readers wrote in noting a YouTube video about the device.

But who put it there and why remains a mystery.

Patch gave a call to county officials and has not yet heard back.

Meanwhile Patch grabbed a few shots. The company listed on the electronics box is Miovision and calls to them were not immediately returned.

Stay turned as Patch hopes to solve this mystery soon.

A camera would be great idea. I can't believe how many people don't stop at stop signs. Most are people from the neighborhood who must think they're above need to obey the sign. As for who put the device there... what do you think, some alien is watching our traffic patterns?

Middle Road is a county owned/maintained roadway so Patch put in calls to see what they know about it as it could be tied to a traffic study of the road or a look at how effective the stop signs are in terms of reducing speeding. Patch is hoping to hear back from Legislator Bill Lindsay's office or the county transportation department.

Patch just drove by and it seems the device is gone. We'll double check in a bit, and we're still awaiting information from the Suffolk County Department of Works' engineer department.

Illegal or not, thank god for those stop signs. They have finally turned Middle Road into a residential street where folks can safely walk and ride their bikes instead of the speedway that it once was with drivers doing 60 miles per hour. Has anyone died on Middle Road since the stop signs were put up? Now that would be a news story. Someone should look into that.
