All Southold Town Shelters Are Pet-Friendly

Bring Fido along if you have to leave home.

Just in case a resident in Southold Town needs to evacuate in the face of Hurricane Sandy, they can put their precious pets in the car and take them along.

Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell said on Saturday that all town shelters are pet friendly -- except for the special needs shelter at the Southold Town Human Resources Center in Mattituck.

People need to bring a container or cage to confine their pets, and bring any necessary food, water, or other essentials, Russell said. Pet owners will be responsible for all care and feeding of their pets and the pets will be held separate from the general population.

"Since the pets cannot be attended to it is important that the owner bring the cage or other container to house the pet," he said.

Russell and the Office of Emergency Management released a statement Saturday afternoon recommending that all Southold Town residents residing in low-lying areas of the Town prone to flooding/erosion should evacuate to a safe location, and that a state of emergency will be declared as of 5 p.m. Sunday.

The following Southold Town shelters will be available beginning on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Mattituck High School

Southold High School

Greenport High School

Fishers Island School

Each of the shelter listed allows pets.
